On September 26, tropical storm Ondoy ( International name Kestana)  brought, in just six hours, a month’s worth of rainfall ( approximately 13.4 inches of rain) to  Metro Manila  and nearby provinces of Laguna, Rizal, Cavite,  and Batangas.  The massive downpour ,  reported by Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)  as the heaviest rainfall in Philippine history, resulted in the worst flooding of Manila and the nearby areas  in more than 42 years,  submerging eight major cities and municipalities surrounding Laguna Lake. The casualty toll from the devastating onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy has reached   345 deaths, with  42 missing  ( and still counting, as of press time) and six  billion pesos estimated  damage to properties and agriculture.   Half a million Filipinos have been affected , displacing and leaving some 14, 000 of them homeless.  Ondoy, as  CNN reports, proved to be more calamitous than Hurricane Katrina.
