Philippine Life Saving 2016 – Year End Report

Dear Lifesaving Officers, Friends, Partners and Supporters.

A prosperous NEW YEAR (2017) to everyone!

As we start 2017, allow me to thank everyone for all of your efforts in advocating our lifesaving programs in the country.

2016 has been a productive year for PLS, it’s affiliates and partners nationwide and abroad.

I am glad to receive each of your reports and happy to consolidate the impact that we had contributed to the Drowning Prevention Advocacy of Philippine Life Saving and International Life Saving across the globe. For 2016, we were able to enroll and certify more or less.
• 1000 Swim & Survive students
• 350 trained in Resuscitation,
• 150 Special Swim & Survive
• 70 graduates in Bronze Medallion Lifeguard Certification programs coming from our Lifesaving Centers.

Special thanks to the following Lifesaving Centers: PLS Antique, PLS Talisay, PLS Bacolod, PLS Pasay, PLS Baguio, PLS Laguna, PLS Malaybalay, PLS Davao, PLS (BVERT) Santa Fe Cebu, & PLS Cagayan de Oro for sending your report and for the active support in the various lifesaving programs in your AOR.

Gigantes Lifesaving Programs

I would like to again welcome our newly installed Lifesaving Center Officers in the Community in Gigantes Island Carles Iloilo. PLS Gigantes was established as part of the Haiyan Project. It’s duly supported by our partner organization and funder Action Medeor and the German Relief Coalition.  Because of the said support we were able to maximized the impact in the community in Gigantes, Carles.

The ERT/Lifeguard responders were able to attend to total of 133 emergencies both in the community and the tourists visiting the island.

– Road Motorcycle Accidents 18
– Electrocution 1
– Drowning & Near Drowning 36
– Stroke 4
– Cardiac Arrest 1

And did a total of 17,760 duty hours for 2016. With this, we were able to forged collaboration with the local government of Carles and the 4 barangay of Gigantes through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) supporting the Lifeguard Services operation  for 2017 with a total of P696,000.00 initial budget for lifeguard honorarium and center operational expenses.

Phase III of the said project will start 2nd week of January 2017, which will showcase the construction of a Community Lifesaving Operation & Training Center in Barangay Granada Gigantes Norte. The said Center will serve as the operation hub of the newly installed ERT-Lifeguard Services and Swim & Survive Programs in the community.

Swim & Survive in Public Elementary Schools

We were able to certify 14 Swim and Survive Instructors in 4 Public Elementary schools in the island and taught 380 children 5-14 years old during the SAS Trial Session.  Continuous coordination meetings with DepEd Division and District office in Iloilo, SAS School Principals and SAS Teachers to work out  inclusion of Swim and Survive Program in the K12 curriculum in Physical Education in the school opening period in June 2017.

Lifesaving Sports

Philippine Life Saving sent 2 delegates Coach Jonathan Espiritu of PLS Center -Pasay and Mr. Oliver Toledo from PLS Center Antique to attend and represent the country to the International Life Saving Asia – Pacific Lifesaving Coaches Seminar held in Phuket Thailand  December 2016.

Mr. Espiritu, a Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross Awardee of Royal Life Saving Australia and Philippine Life Saving and Mr. Oliver Toledo will be tap to share the knowledge learned from the seminar to other lifesaving coaches in all PLS center 1st quarter of 2017. With the goal of increasing involvement with the grassroots and high performance in PLS lifesaving sports athletes towards the participation to the Rescue 2018 in Adelaide Australia.

The biennial Lifesaving Sports event “ The Great Titan 2016” was held at Gigantes Island Carles Iloilo in support of the lifesaving programs in community and schools. The event was participated by, 230 participants 60% of which is from Gigantes island and Carles. The rest of the team came from PLS Center Bacolod, PLS Center Antique, PLS Center Pasay & PLS Center Cagayan de Oro.
